“The Pot Head” Is a 20″x16″ oil on canvas. It is the first completed in a series I have begun that features disconnected heads and mouths. The next in line is a much bigger 48″x36″ oil on canvas work-in-progress.
After years of watching digital painting mature, it suddenly occurred to me that If I didn’t embrace the medium, I might be missing the boat. This turned out to be a great decision as I very much enjoy it. I have many thoughts on digital art and the stigma that accompanies, its superiorities, and its shortcomings that I will write about soon. Here is a portrait of an elderly musician who is definitely not the guy who will not let you use his name. It is an oil on canvas and won a best of show award at my local county fair. The next image is a digital painting of Albert Einstein That also won a best of show award at the same local county fair.
“Portrait of an Elderly Musician” Oil on Canvas
“Portrait of Albert Einstein” Digital Painting
I have used digital art applications for many years for promotional graphics, commercial graphic design applications, and personal projects, but in early 2024 I discovered how accessible and usable digital display tablet had gotten over the past decade. The Albert Einstein portrait pictured above was my first project with a $200 Huion 13” tablet. I won an award with it, quickly secured a commission for another portrait, and have been dedicating a large portion of my creative efforts to digital projects ever since. The image of the sousaphone playing a double bass that is also playing the sousaphone is a small part of a much larger digital work that I finishing both on the computer and on canvas. What I really appreciate about digital painting is the versatility it allows with the lack of commitment required to boldly start a new idea. The convenience of instant full spectrum color, texture, and shape also promotes spontaneity along with vast visual exploration and creative bravery. Pictured below is some more of my digital portrait work.
Here are a few more of the murals I have painted. Some are public and some are private.Click or tap on the images to enlarge.
I have painted 3 of this same image for the same patron. This one is on his house. This one is on the front of an auto repair garage. This small mural is the South Historic of Palatka, Florida. It can be seen from the residential street and features the home owner’s beloved dogs and cat. This one can be seen by boaters on Dunn’s Creek in Satsuma, Florida. The next image is a view of the creek.View of Dunn’s Creek. The island on the other side of the creek has monkeys that have made their way from Silver Springs where the Tarzan movies were filmed. The monkeys were brought in for the movie, but somehow never removed. They now infest the swamps in this part of Florida. These next two are part of a series of interactive murals commissioned by the owners of The Urban Farmhouse in Downtown Palatka, FL.Come visit the Urban Farmhouse to pose with the largemouth bass!!This may be considered by some as signage, but I view it as a mural. This was commissioned by the Putnam County Florida Supervisor of Elections. Again, signage or mural? This is a “Mobile Mural” in Brooksville, FL. It is actually painted on a gigantic canvas and can be moved from location to location. The theme is a historic view of Brooksville’s downtown in the 1940’s . It lies on the Tamiami Trail which connects Miami with Tampa.
